What should I expect my first visit?
The first visit will be about 1 hour long. There will be paperwork to complete. The physical therapist will question you about your pain or symptoms and measurements will be taken to assess your range of motion, strength and functional abilities. The therapist will develop a plan of care and begin treatment. There usually will be instructions given or exercises for you to perform at home to address your needs.
How should I dress?
Comfortable clothes that do not restrict movement should be worn to therapy. We suggest supportive shoes or tennis shoes be worn to therapy for exercise. If you will be having your knee treated, it is always a good idea to wear or bring a pair of shorts. If your shoulder will be treated, a loose T-shirt or tank top to expose the shoulder is helpful.
What kind of things will I do in physical therapy?
A program is designed by your therapist for your individual needs. Flexibility or stretching exercises may be performed for tight muscles. Strengthening exercises may be initiated to target the injured area. Education in posture and body mechanics may be given. Balance activities may be performed and new approaches to performing troublesome day-to-day tasks will be discussed. Your program may change from treatment to treatment depending on your progress. As your condition improves, the program will be progressed to challenge your abilities. A home exercise program will also be developed to accelerate your recovery.
How long will my visit last?
Average visits are about 45 minutes depending on the extent of your injury or symptoms.
Will physical therapy be painful?
There may be some pain or discomfort associated with exercise for the injured part. However the benefits of the exercises far outweigh the discomfort you may encounter. There are techniques which may be applied to lessen the degree of pain you might experience. Those patients who avoid exercise or movement often have complications that require extended intervention.
How long will I need physical therapy?
The needs of each patient are different. The nature and extent of the problem or symptoms will determine how often the patient attends or how many treatment sessions will be needed to promote healing and restore pain-free function. Often, the insurance company restricts the number of visits allowed in a given year.
Will my insurance cover physical therapy?
Most insurances will cover the cost of physical therapy. Each insurance policy has plans specific to your coverage. It is suggested that you contact your insurance company about your specific benefits. There may be a co-pay for each visit or a limited number of visits allowed. Each plan is different. Our office staff will check and verify insurance benefits as well.
